The Affordable Housing Investors Council (AHIC) is where equity investors in the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program come together to network, learn, share and develop best practices with a goal preserving and strengthening the housing credit as an efficient and effective tool for the development of affordable housing. AHIC is the only organization that promotes the investor’s voice and perspective in this unique public/private partnership.
Our corporate members represent financial institutions, insurance companies and other economic housing tax credit investors. They vary in size and geographic reach and create a community of more than 700 like-minded professionals, including tax, finance, accounting, asset management, underwriting and business development leaders.
Together, AHIC members have invested more than $100 billion in affordable housing through the housing credit program. These investments drive the development of 90 percent of the housing in the United States for low-income families, seniors, and people with special needs, with nearly 3.5 million homes developed over the last 35 years.
AHIC’s membership invests in housing in every state plus Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam and represents the vast majority of these investment dollars.
Since its inception, AHIC has:
- established best practices in underwriting and asset management that have been widely adopted by the field;
- produced guidelines for acquiring affordable housing projects, negotiating deal terms and conducting secondary market transactions;
- created standard formats for reporting, watch lists and risk ratings;
- provided crucial financial support and data for key research projects about housing credit developments; and
- brought the experience and expertise of the investor community to support improvements to the housing credit finance system
AHIC’s work has contributed to the tremendous success of the housing credit program and its position as the best-performing real estate asset class in the United States, with foreclosure rates less than one percent.
